Russia warns of US interference in China's internal affairs over Hong Kong Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said the United States should not be threatened by a bill called the National Security Act for Hong Kong. This would undermine Washington's international standing.

US should not interfere in China's internal matter, Russian FM on Hong Kong

Last Thursday, China proposed a national security law in Hong Kong to ban separatism and treason, and is trying to get the law passed. Arguing for the law, China said it is needed to deal with the threat of terrorism.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently threatened China by sending a report to the US Congress. He condemned Beijing on Friday, saying Washington was "strongly condemning" the way China is trying to pass "unilateral" and "hostile" laws for Hong Kong.

In this context, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that the US rhetoric about Hong Kong is a blow to China's internal affairs. He added that Washington's attempts to intervene would undermine America's credibility with other countries. He also said that although the US Secretary of State's rhetoric was unprecedented, it was not unexpected for Russia.

In 1997, China gained control of Hong Kong from the British. Although Hong Kong is a semi-autonomous region of China, it is trying to become independent and there is enough provocation from the United States. After months of calm in Hong Kong, the situation is heating up again with China's plan to introduce the law. Police in Hong Kong fired tear gas on Sunday and detained hundreds of people.
